LED Spotlight 101 - Base Type, Parameters and Application

Concept:

Spotlight is a type of lamp that produces an intense focused beam of light to illuminate a small area or an object. It’s usually directed at will. LED technology is now widely used in spotlights to replace the high-power-consumption halogens. We put together some useful information here as a guidance for you to select the LED spotlights that best fit your needs.

Classification:

LED spotlights are different in base shape. They can be classified into bayonet, screw and plug-in three types. Each works in a different way to connect the light bulb to the electrical voltage. The most popular models are GU10 (bayonet), MR16 (plug-in) and E27 (screw).

The GU10 base is a commonly seen bayonet-base. A bayonet mount is a light bulb base consisting of interlocking slots and pins. “G” stands for globe-shaped, “U” means the base has a couple of pins, and “10” tells you the two pins are 10mm apart. Other popular bases in the market are GU5.3, GU6.3 and so on. One of GU10 lamps is as shown in the picture below.

The MR16 light is a type of plug-in base spotlight that is most widely applied. “MR” means “multifaceted reflector”. The number means the diameter of cup rim. Unit is 1/8 inch, thus the diameter of MR16 is 16*1/8 inch = 2 inches. There is also MR11 and a lot more different sizes of plug-in spotlights in the market. See the picture below for an example of MR16 lamps.

The E27 base, also known as Edison screw, is the earliest and most popular screw base. The number represents the diameter of the base, 27mm. The E26 and E27 are usually interchangeable. E12, E17 and E39 also fall in the screw base category. The picture below shows an E27 lamp.

Basic parameters:

Voltage: LED spotlights can be applied under a wide range of voltages, 220V, 110V, 36V, 24V and 12V. Therefore, you should pay careful attention to the corresponding voltage when you choose power supplies.

Operating temperature: Generally, LED spotlights require temperature of -104 F – 140 F to function well.

Protection grade: This is also a critical parameter that indicates the quality of LED spotlights. When people use LED spotlights outdoors, a waterproof rate of higher than IP65 would be great. It is also required to have relevant pressure proof grade, cracking resistance grade, high and low temperature resistance grade, anti-burning grade, shock resistant grade and anti-corrosion grade.

Power supply: LED lights need constant current drivers to work properly. The quality of the constant current driver may impact the life expectancy of your LED lights. A high efficiency LED driver is the best.

Beam angle: Generally, the beam angle of LED spotlights can be designed as narrow (about 20°), medium (about 50°) and wide (about 120°). Choose accordingly to get your desired lighting effect.

Power: Most LED spotlights have low wattages, whereas the high-wattage LED technology is also developing and becoming more and more common. The wattage of a LED spotlight can be as high as 20W, but currently, 1W, 3W, 5W LED spotlights are used more widely.


Application:

LED spotlights are mainly used for decoration, commercial space lighting andarchitectural decorative lighting. Such as individual building, historical buildings exterior lighting, landscape lighting, billboard lighting, counter lighting and other specific facilities, as well as bars, clubs and other entertainment atmosphere lighting, etc. The market is promising.
